The Healthcare Technology Report is pleased to announce The Top 25 Healthcare Technology Leaders of Miami for 2023. As the only U.S. city that was founded by a woman (a local businesswoman called Julia Tuttle) Miami's subtropical roots are steeped in entrepreneurship. Its diverse cultures, tax incentives, and a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem combine to give the Magic City a favorable business climate, especially for the booming healthcare and life sciences space. Today, Miami-Dade County houses renowned corporations like Beckman Coulter, BD Biosciences, Cordis (a Johnson & Johnson Company), and Merck, showcasing its capacity to attract industry leaders. Meanwhile, the University of Miami's Life Science Park serves as a significant recent addition to the region, fostering a collaborative environment that brings together faculty, scientists, students, and entrepreneurs to promote innovation and partnership. The recipients of this year's awards exemplify excellence in the healthcare and life sciences industry, with many of them guiding some of the most influential companies in the world.

Esteemed professionals such as John Shea, the Senior Director of Clinical Science in Clinical Development at Travere Therapeutics, made the cut this year. Since joining Travere 2021, Shea has notably helped his company gain FDA approval for FILSPARI, the only non-immunosuppressive therapy for IgAN, a rare kidney disease. Likewise, we have Pedro Delgado, who is currently leveraging his 45 years of industry experience as the Director of Global Design Quality Engineering at Cordis. Lastly, there is Stuart Hart, the Chief Medical Officer and Corporate VP of Integra LifeSciences. An extremely well-respected figure in his field, Hart has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, filed 15 patents, and has already won numerous awards for his innovation, research studies, and teaching.

1. Stuart Hart
Company: Integra LifeSciences
Title: Chief Medical Officer and Corporate Vice President

As the Chief Medical Officer and Corporate VP of Integra LifeSciences, Stuart Hart is responsible for Integra’s worldwide clinical development activities, including clinical research, clinical trial operations and medical affairs. Hart is also responsible for scientific support, medical support, medical safety, and R&D innovation. Notably, Hart is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology – with a subspecialty board certification in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. In addition to his Integra duties, he is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons.

Prior to joining Integra in January 2023, Hart served as VP of Medical Affairs for Urology and Critical Care at Becton Dickinson (BD). Before joining BD, he served as a senior medical director for the Surgical Innovations business at Medtronic. Hart previouly spent much of his career working as an academic physician at Emory University and the University of South Florida (USF). He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He also holds an MBA from MIT and a master’s in entrepreneurship in applied technologies from the USF Muma College of Business. Overall, Hart has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, filed 15 patents, and has won numerous awards for innovation, research studies and teaching.

2. Jean-Jacques Borie
Company: Thermo Fisher Scientific
Title: Executive Director and Head of Business Technology & Data Architecture

Jean-Jacques Borie is the Executive Director and Head of Business Technology & Data Architecture at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He first joined the company in 2019 as SVP of innovation, Medimix International. His company, Thermo Fisher Scientific, is the world leader in serving science, with annual revenue of approximately $40 billion. Its mission is to enable its customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Previously, Borie was a co-founder and CTO at Leade.rs. Before that, he served as a CTO at Carmudi. Earlier in his career, he worked with B2L/BBDO as a technical project manager, DBA, and developer. Borie earned a master of pharmacy from the University of Florida, an EMBA from TRIUM Global Executive MBA, and a master’s in computer science from Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers.

 

3. Elizabeth Murray
Company: Gilead Sciences
Title: Executive Director of Global Patient Solutions, Distribution, Supply & Voluntary License

Elizabeth Murray is the Executive Director of Global Patient Solutions at Gilead Sciences, a renowned biopharmaceutical company dedicated to advancing breakthrough medicines for HIV, viral hepatitis, and cancer. She oversees operations in 127 countries across Africa, Central and South Asia, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Murray joined Gilead in 2005, focusing on expanding the company's support for individuals living with HIV disease. It is worthy to note that Murray's leadership at Gilead has been instrumental in expanding access to life-saving medications. She has played a pivotal role in launching combination therapy for HIV, establishing the first Medicaid HMO for individuals with HIV in Florida, and expanding access to Gilead's hepatitis C cure in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Murray brings over 20 years of experience in pharmaceuticals and healthcare delivery. She holds a bachelor's in electrical engineering from the University of Miami and master's degrees in business administration and industrial engineering. Based in Miami, Florida, she is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

4. Mariana Watanabe
Company: Merck Group
Title: Director of Head of Business Planning & Implementation

Dr. Mariana Watanabe is the Head of Business Planning & Implementation for the Contract Testing Organization of MilliporeSigma, which is a subsidiary of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. She first joined Merck KGaA in 2015. Prior to this role, Watanabe drove and implemented commercial strategies and go-to-market initiatives for the Process Solutions business unit across multiple global geographies, supporting customers and teams from multiple market segments, and commercial profiles – such as global, regional, emerging biotech. She previously led a global supply network and process optimization of a COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing.

Watanabe holds a PhD in science, biotechnology, from the University of Sao Paulo. Her thesis focused on vaccine compounds development and bioprocess optimization at Butantan Institute in Brazil – the largest producer of immunological drugs and antitoxins in Latin America.

 

5. Paula Hackl
Company: EVERSANA
Title: Chief Transformation Officer

Paula Hackl is the Chief Transformation Officer of EVERSANA, a leading independent provider of global services to the life sciences industry. The company’s integrated solutions are rooted in the patient experience and span all stages of the product life cycle to deliver long-term, sustainable value for patients, prescribers, channel partners, and payers. The company serves more than 670 organizations, including innovative start-ups and established pharmaceutical companies, to advance life sciences solutions for a healthier world. Notably, Hackl has 25 years of experience. She began her career in 1998.

Before joining EVERSANA, Hackl was an SVP, MD - transformation officer at EVERSANA INTOUCH. Before that, she served as a VP of business transformation at Intouch Group. Earlier in her career, she worked with Vivo as a senior manager for telco, marketing, retention, global programs, and CRM. Hackl graduated from Australian Catholic University – Brisbane with an MBA. She also graduated from the Universidade Salvador with an undergraduate degree in international business.

 

6. Radha Goolabsingh
Company: QuidelOrtho
Title: Vice President of Global Head of Regulatory Affairs

Radha Goolabsingh is Vice President, Global Head of Regulatory Affairs at QuidelOrtho. She joined the company in 2021. As a global provider of innovative in vitro diagnostics technologies designed for point-of-care settings, clinical labs and transfusion medicine, QuidelOrtho develops and manufactures intelligent solutions that are transforming data into understanding and action for more people in more places every day. Goolabsingh has over 25 years of regulatory affairs experience in in-vitro diagnostics and pharmaceutical FDA-regulated industries. She started her career as a medical technologist in a hospital clinical laboratory environment. Since then, she has held various roles of increasing responsibility in quality assurance, technical support and regulatory affairs at Baxter Diagnostics, TEVA Pharmaceuticals, and Beckman Coulter. In her current role at QuidelOrtho, she provides leadership into the development of global regulatory strategies across the product lifecycle to meet the needs of the business.

7. Adam Logal
Company: OPKO Health, Inc.
Title: SVP and CFO

Adam Logal has been with OPKO as the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since March 2014. Prior to that, he held the positions at the company, including Vice President of Finance, Chief Accounting Officer, and Treasurer and Director of Finance, Chief Accounting Officer, and Treasurer. His company, OPKO, is a multinational biopharmaceutical and diagnostics provider that aims to establish leading positions in rapidly growing markets through its expertise in discovery, development, and commercialization, as well as its proprietary technologies.

Before joining OPKO, Logal held senior management roles at Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company. He also worked his way up through various positions at Nabi, ultimately serving as Senior Director of Accounting and Reporting. In addition to his current duties at OPKO, Logal also serves as the Chairman for Xenetics Biosciences, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on next-generation biologic drugs and novel orphan oncology therapeutics. Furthermore, he previously served on the board of directors for VBI Vaccines.

 

8. Carolyn Berg
Company: Catalent Pharma Solutions
Title: Vice President of Business Development

Carolyn Berg serves as the Vice President of Business Development at Catalent Pharma Solutions, a global leader in enabling pharmaceutical, biotech, and consumer health partners to optimize product development and supply for patients worldwide. With over 25 years of experience in marketing, sales, and business development, Berg has successfully executed commercial plans, launched products, and managed alliances to drive revenue growth. 9. Renata Mantovani

Title: Senior Director of International Human Resources

Renata Mantovani is the Senior Director of Human Resources for Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, a commercial stage biotechnology company headquartered in Novato, California. Ultragenyx’s vision is to lead the future of rare disease medicine. In her current role, Mantovani’s leadership scope spans a broad international focus. Notably at Ultragenyx she has been successful in creating a great place to work for employees in the Latin America region, Canada, and Japan.

In Mantovani’s 17-year career as a global human resources leader, she has earned the reputation for being an HR professional who provides strategic thought partnership to leaders — while also showing an unwaverign commitment to guiding employees toward their full potential. Her vast career experience spans the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, microscopy, metrology, and optical industries. She has worked at numerous premier organizations, including Novartis, Carl Zeiss, and Alexion. In terms of education, Mantovani holds a bachelor’s in linguistics/translation interpretation by Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She also holds an MBA with emphasis in Human Resources from Fundacao Getulio Vargas in Sao Paulo Brazil. On top of that, she is currently pursuing a Human Resources Management Certification from Miami University.

10. Aaron Goodstein

Aaron Goodstein is the Senior Director of Medical Safety Operations, Medical Devices & Global External Innovation at Johnson & Johnson, the largest and most diversified healthcare products company in the world. With 19 years of professional experience, Goodstein joined the company in 2011 as a Director of Quality Systems & Compliance in MD&D Medical Safety. 11. Shawn Davis

Shawn Davis is the Executive Director of Oncology Market Access Strategy at Bayer, a global enterprise with core competencies in the Life Science fields of healthcare and agriculture. Davis joined the pharma giant in 2022, bringing a wealth of experience in the biopharmaceutical healthcare industry. 12. Alfredo Castañeda

Alfredo Castañeda is the Director of Extremities Recon Product Development at Smith+Nephew, a global medical technology company. 13. Kristi Gerstenkorn
Company: Elevance Health
Title: Director of Pharmacy Operations

Kristi Gerstenkorn began her professional career 20 years ago. Today she is the Director of Pharmacy Operations at Elevance Health, the largest for-profit managed healthcare company in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Previously named Anthem, Inc. until June 2022, Elevance Health’s services include: medical, pharmaceutical, dental, behavioral health, long-term care, and disability plans through affiliated companies such as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield; and Empire BlueCross BlueShield in New York State, among many others. As of 2022, the company had 46.8 million members within its affiliated companies' health plans.

Gerstenkorn first got her start in 2003 as a pharmacy manager at Publix Pharmacy. From there, she went on to Pasteur Pharmacy, before eventually rising as a pharmacy manager at EasyScripts, her most recent position prior to joining Elevance Health. Gerstenkorn graduated from Nova Southeastern University- College of Pharmacy with a doctorate in pharmacy; and from Florida International University with an undergraduate degree in dietetics and nutrition.

 

14. Lenny Marrero
Company: Apotex Corp.
Title: Vice President of Finance

Lenny Marrero is the Vice President of Finance at Apotex Corp, a global pharmaceutical company that produces high-quality, affordable medicines for patients around the world. Based in Canada, Apotex employs nearly 8,000 people worldwide in manufacturing, R&D, and commercial operations. 15. Pedro Delgado

Pedro Delgado is the Director of Global Design Quality Engineering at Cordis, a worldwide leader in the development and manufacturing of interventional cardiovascular technology.
With more than 60-year history of pioneering products to treat millions of patients, Cordis has built a robust global footprint with operations in more than 60 countries around the world. Having started his professional journey in 1978, Delgado has 45 years of experience.

Before joining Cordis, Delgado was a director of cardio care franchise, supplier, and external QA for J&J MD&D at Johnson & Johnson. Before that, he served as a director of supplier quality at Biosense Webster. Earlier in his career, he worked with Coulter Corporation in quality assurance. Delgado graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University with an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering technology. He also graduated from Miami Dade College with an undergraduate degree in electronics technology.

 

16. C-Maria Manning
Company: Regeneron
Title: Senior Director and Head of Global Regulatory Intelligence

C-Maria Manning has built a successful professional career spanning 20 years, with her current role as the Senior Director and Head of Global Regulatory Intelligence at Regeneron. Founded in 1988, Regeneron is a renowned biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of products targeting eye disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammation. The company boasts a portfolio of successful products, such as Eylea for eye diseases; Praluent for LDL cholesterol lowering; Dupixent in immunology; Libtayo in oncology; and Kevzara for rheumatoid arthritis.

Manning joined Regeneron in 2009, initially serving as an Associate Director of Clinical Trial Management. Over the years, she progressed through various positions, including Associate Director of Clinical Compliance & Training and Associate Director of Global Regulatory Intelligence. Prior to her current role, Manning held the position of Director of Head Global Regulatory Intelligence. Notably, she began her professional journey in 2003 as a Lead Study Manager at GlaxoSmithKline. She graduated from Duke University.

 

18. John Shea
Company: Travere Therapeutics
Title: Senior Director of Clinical Science

John Shea is the Senior Director of Clinical Science in Clinical Development at Travere Therapeutics. Based in San Diego, California, Travere is on a mission to identify, develop, and deliver life changing therapies to people living with rare diseases. Since joining the company in 2021, Shea has notably helped Travere gain FDA approval for FILSPARI, the only non-immunosuppressive therapy for IgAN, a rare kidney disease. He also works on his company’s program for homocystinuria, an inborn metabolic error disease wherein too much protein is toxic to development and functioning.

Prior to Travere, Shea led Clinical Research Operations for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Additionally, he contributed to the center becoming NCI designated. Overall, he’s been in the industry for 23 years and held prior positions at Delcath Systems, Novartis, Forest (now AbbVie), CoAxia, Kensey Nash, and Wyeth. Among his career milestones, Shea has four FDA approved products. He is a former medical device specialist and BIMO investigator with the US FDA. He worked in benchtop research prior to joining the industry. He holds an MS in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University and a BS in Biology from West Chester University.

 

19. Hugo Erroch
Company: Immucor, Inc.
Title: Director of Export International

In 1983 Hugo Otiniano-Erroch started his career at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics in Chicago. From there, he went to start a company in Miami: Sistemas de Diagnostico Universal – and later Diagnostico UAL in Peru, where he worked from 1998-2004. Since then, Otiniano-Erroch has been with Immucor, a global leader in Transfusion and Transplant diagnostics, facilitating patient-donor compatibility. Founded in 1982, the company strives to create a world where anyone, anywhere in need of a transfusion or a transplant, receives the right blood or transplant that is safe, accessible, and affordable.

Otiniano-Erroch graduated from Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. He also holds a master’s in clinical pathology from Saint Mary’s of Nazareth in Chicago.

 

20. Mariola Vazquez
Company: Dermavant Sciences
Title: Health Outcomes Director

Mariola Vazquez is a Health Outcomes Director at Dermavant Sciences, a specialty biopharmaceutical company developing innovative prescription therapies for dermatologic diseases. Dermavant has acquired promising compounds that address unmet therapeutic needs and has rapidly established a robust dermatology R&D pipeline.

Prior to joining Dermavant Sciences, Vazquez held medical science/outcomes liaison roles with Leo Pharma, Sanofi, and GSK. Additionally, she served as Director of Pharmacy/Clinical Pharmacy Manager with Integrated Delivery Networks, owned by Humana and Centene. 21. Ruben Ceballos

Having started his professional career in 1987, Ceballos has 36 years of experience. Before joining Signant, he was a managing owner at Provincetown Aquasports. Before that, he served as a senior director of project leadership at Parexel. Earlier in his career, he worked with Brandom Manufacturing as a junior programmer. Ceballos graduated from the University of Miami Herbert Business School with an MBA, and from Southwestern University with an undergraduate degree in computer information systems.

 

22. Evelyn Rodriguez
Company: Keralty
Title: Director of Pharmacy

Evelyn Rodriguez began her professional career 20 years ago. Today she is the Director of Pharmacy at Keralty, a multinational business group offering integrated health solutions across the health sector—providing both healthcare financing and healthcare delivery itself. Its approach to integrating practice, education and research has made it leader in patient experience, clinical outcomes and innovation. It strives to deliver the best care to every member and patient, helping them get healthier and providing comprehensive care for the sick.

Rodriguez first got her start in 2003 as a staff pharmacist at Kindred Healthcare. Later she eventually rose to become a pharmacy manager at CVS Health, her most recent position prior to joining Keralty. Rodriguez graduated from Nova Southeastern University- College of Pharmacy with a doctor of pharmacy; and from Florida International University with an undergraduate degree in biology.

 

23. Andy Hector
Company: Papa
Title: Director of Sales Operations

As Director of Sales Operations at Papa, Andy Hector empowers his company’s enterprise sales and client success teams through various sales initiatives. Additionally, he assists with the onboarding and training of new hires – as it relates to Papa organization, health plan industry, sales enablement tools, outreach methods, territory analysis, and other areas. In his current role, Hector also serves as the lead administrator for the Papa CRM (HubSpot and Salesforce) through building and maintaining a multitude of pipeline organization techniques, calculation properties, workflows and market categorizations.

Prior to Papa, Hector was customer service specialist at Baxter International Inc. Earlier in his career, he worked with AdvaCare Systems as customer service representative. Hector earned an undergraduate degree in organizational leadership and management from Illinois State University.

 

24. Eric Mendez

Eric Mendez is the Vice President of Pathology at Gastro Health, Florida's largest medical group of board certified physicians specializing in digestive and colon health. It employs some of the nation’s premier gastroenterologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, and allied health professionals – as well as its own accredited and licensed ambulatory surgical centers. Currently, Gastro Health employs over 500 individuals, including 100 providers.

Mendez, who began his career in 2004, has 19 years of experience. Before joining Gastro Health, he was a lead technologist at Aurora Diagnostics. Before that, he served as a research assistant at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Mendez graduated from Florida International University - College of Business with an MBA, and from Barry University with an undergraduate degree in biotechnology.

 

25. Kate Bixby

Kate Bixby, who began her professional career 10 years ago, is now the Director of Sales for AdaptHealth, a full-service home medical equipment and respiratory company with operations in 46 states. The company offers a breadth of clinically-focused products and services to help patients with daily activities of life, including: sleep and respiratory therapy, mobility products, wound care, non-invasive ventilation and nutrition.

Bixby got her start as an operations supervisor at Dr. Minkes and Associates. From there, she went on to AeroCare Home Medical Inc, before eventually rising to senior product specialist at Tactile Medical, her most recent position prior to joining AdaptHealth. Bixby graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine with an MPH, and from Spring Hill College with an undergraduate degree in biology.
