The Top 25 Healthcare Technology Leaders of Miami for 2022

The Healthcare Technology Report is pleased to announce The Top 25 Healthcare Technology Leaders of Miami for 2022. The Miami metro area is home to five Fortune 500 companies, the 8th highest rate of business growth in the nation, more than six million people, and some of the most innovative healthcare technology companies in the world. Invariably, for a company to be successful over the long term, it must have great leadership. The executives on this year’s list, who have driven their companies to profitability while helping patients immeasurably in the process, are prime examples of this rule.

Some of the elite leaders on this year’s list include Chairman and CEO Maurice Ferre, whose company Insightec is using its Exablate Neuro platform to harness the therapeutic power of acoustic energy to provide treatment for tremors; COO Peter Mincieli of Nutek Orthopaedics, whose revolutionary pre-articular fixation devices and bone augmentations preserve joint motion after the repair of musculoskeletal injuries; and Senior VP of Regulatory Affairs Loni Da Silva of Oyster Point Pharma, which is advancing breakthrough science with its focus on the discovery, development, and commercialization of first-in-class therapies to address ophthalmic disease.

From smaller, precision medical device companies with just over 100 employees, to multinational pharmaceutical giants with nearly 200,000 employees, the companies represented by the leaders on this year’s list run the gamut in size and area of specialty. But they all made the cut thanks to their dedication and tireless work toward developing technological solutions to the most pressing needs in healthcare. 1. Higo Naruhito

Title: Chief Executive Officer and Chairman

Higo Naruhito is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Noven Pharmaceuticals. He first joined the company in 2017. Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a dynamic specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the research, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of prescription pharmaceutical products. It is committed to developing and offering pharmaceutical products that meaningfully benefit patients, with a commitment to advancing patient care through transdermal drug delivery. Noven is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of transdermal patches, and it serves as Hisamitsu's growth platform for U.S. prescription pharmaceuticals.

Previously, Naruhito worked for Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. He received an undergraduate degree from Kumamoto University and was a visiting scientist in transdermal drug delivery at the University of California, San Diego.

 

2. Maurice Ferre
Company: Insightec
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Maurice Ferre is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Insightec. He first joined the company in 2014. Insightec is a global healthcare company creating the next generation of patient care by realizing the therapeutic power of acoustic energy. The company's Exablate Neuro platform focuses sound waves, safely guided by MRI, to provide tremor treatment to patients with medication-refractory Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease.

Previously, Ferre co-founded and was Chairman, President, and CEO of MAKO Surgical Corp, and before that a Vice President of Strategic Business Development at GE Healthcare. Earlier in his career, he founded and was President and CEO of Visualization Technology. Ferre earned an MD from Boston University School of Medicine and an undergraduate degree in biology from Bennington College.

 

3. Bob Palmisano
Company: Wright Medical
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Bob Palmisano is the Chief Executive Officer of Wright Medical, a global medical device company focused on providing extremity and biologic solutions that enable clinicians to alleviate pain and restore their patients’ lifestyles. The company is a recognized leader in surgical solutions for the upper extremity (shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand), lower extremity (foot and ankle), and biologics markets, three of the fastest growing segments in orthopedics. Before joining Wright Medical, Palmisano was President and CEO of ev3 Inc., and before that, President and CEO of Intralase Corp. Earlier in his career, he worked with Summit Autonomous, Inc. as a Director. Palmisano graduated from Rutgers University with an MBA, and from Providence College with an undergraduate degree in political science.

 

4. Peter Mincieli
Company: Nutek Orthopaedics
Title: Chief Operating Officer

Peter Mincieli is the Chief Operating Officer of Nutek Orthopedics. Nutek develops orthopaedic devices for medical practitioners worldwide. The company's line of business includes the wholesale distribution of surgical and other medical instruments, apparatus, and equipment. Its pre-articular fixation devices and bone augmentations preserve joint motion after the repair of musculoskeletal injuries as well as capture and hold intra- and extra-articular fracture fragments in place, enabling surgeons to allow passive or active motion at the joint without the risk of fracture displacement.

Previously, Mincieli was assistant director of new technology development at Howmedica, before eventually rising to COO at General Orthopedics, his most recent position prior to joining Nutek.

 

5. Loni Da Silva
Company: Oyster Point Pharma
Title: Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs

Loni Da Silva is the Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Oyster Point Pharma, a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of first-in-class therapies to address ophthalmic disease. It continuously strives to advance breakthrough science and deliver therapies seeking to address the unmet needs of patients and eye care professionals. Oyster Point is a people-focused organization with a strong culture of integrity, scientific excellence, and agility. Da Silva first got her start in 1987 as a Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs at Hoffmann La-Roche. From there, she went on to Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, before eventually rising to SVP of Global Regulatory Affairs at Ophthotech Corp, her most recent position prior to joining Oyster Point Pharma. Da Silva graduated from Long Island University with an MS in regulatory affairs, and from Penn State University with an undergraduate degree in microbiology.

 

6. Joe Busky
Company: Ortho Clinical Diagnostics
Title: Chief Financial Officer

Joe Busky is the Chief Financial Officer of Ortho Clinical Diagnostics. He first joined the company in 2022. Ortho Clinical Diagnostics is one of the world’s largest pure-play in vitro diagnostics (IVD) companies dedicated to transforming patient care. More than 800,000 patients across the world are impacted by Ortho’s tests each day. Because every test is a life, Ortho provides hospitals, hospital networks, clinical laboratories, and blood banks around the world with innovative technology and tools to ensure test results are fast, accurate, and reliable. Ortho's customized solutions enhance clinical outcomes, improve efficiency, overcome lab staffing challenges, and reduce costs.

Previously, Busky was CFO of Vyaire Medical, Inc., and before that CFO of FDH Velocitel. Earlier in his career, he worked with Price Waterhouse LLP as a senior manager. Busky earned an MBA and an undergraduate degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland.

 

7. Cass Lundgren
Company: National Dentex, LLC
Title: Chief Operations Officer

Cass Lundgren is the Chief Operations Officer for National Dentex, LLC, the solution for all dental restorations, appliances, and other lab services. NDX is the largest dental lab network with more than 30 service oriented local labs, aesthetic labs with deep experience and skills, simple domestic and offshore mail-order options, and the most advanced technology in digital dentistry and surgical planning.

Before joining National Dentex LLC, Lundgren was a Senior Vice President of Global Operations at VISION EASE, and before that, a key account manager at eFederal Systems. Lundgren graduated from University of Minnesota - Carlson School of Management with an MBA, and from the United States Military Academy at West Point with an undergraduate degree in systems engineering and pre-law.

 

8. Patricio Vargas
Company: Procaps
Title: Chief Financial Officer

Patricio Vargas is the Chief Financial Officer of Procaps. He first joined the company in 2021. Procaps is a Barranquilla, Colombia-based manufacturing and commercializing company of specialized pharmaceutical forms. Its purpose is to be recognized as an organization that generates solutions to improve the quality of people's health through integral pharmaceutical innovations, under a sustainable model of constant internationalization. Procaps directs its efforts to health improvement, offering medicines and services that ensure international-category quality standards, innovative and accessible due to their cost-benefit relation, thus contributing to the creation of healthy individuals, educating them in the best life habits.

Previously, Vargas was Vice President of Finance and Treasurer at CMPC, and before that, CFO of CMPC Packaging. Earlier in his career, he worked with SQM as a Head of Investor Relations. Vargas earned an MBA from Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, and an undergraduate degree from Universidad Católica de Chile.

 

9. Jay Feinberg
Company: Gift of Life Marrow Registry
Title: Co-President and Chief Executive Officer

Jay Feinberg is Co-President and Chief Executive Officer of Gift of Life Marrow Registry. He first joined the company in 1991. Gift of Life Marrow Registry is a leading national facilitator of blood stem cell and bone marrow transplants for children and adults suffering from life-threatening diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell, and other genetic disorders all over the world. It is accredited by the World Marrow Donor Association, is an affiliate donor registry of the National Marrow Donor Program, and a participant in the international Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide registry.

Feinberg is also President and CEO of Gift of Life Biologics, CEO of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Gift of Life - Be The Match Collection Center, and CEO of the Gift of Life Center for Cell and Gene Therapy. He earned an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Dickinson College and received an honorary doctorate from Yeshiva University.

 

10. Sara Lam

Title: Chief Operating Officer

Sara Lam is the Chief Operating Officer of Comen. Previously, Lam served as Director of Project Operations for Comen. She graduated from HEC Paris with an MBA, and from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics with an undergraduate degree in business administration, management, and operations.

 

11. Mark Kemp

Title: Chief Executive Officer

From there, he went on to XeTel, before eventually rising to Operating Partner at Frazier Healthcare Partners, his most recent position prior to joining EPTAM Precision Solutions. Kemp graduated from the University of Florida.

 

12. Alfredo Armengol, IV
Company: Abbott Laboratories
Title: Divisional Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa – Structural Heart

Alfredo Armengol is the Divisional Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa within Abbott Laboratories’ Structural Heart business. Abbott’s primary objective is to help people live better lives through better health. More specifically, the guiding mission for the Structural Heart organization’s every day work is to restore health and improve quality of life through the design and provision of device and management solutions for the treatment of structural heart disease. It requires that the solutions offered provide an improved benefit to risk profile as compared to the existing standards of care.

Armengol started his career in corporate finance at the Northern Trust Bank. From there, he moved to healthcare, first with Johnson & Johnson, followed by Abbott, where his 16-year career focused on the U.S. markets, followed by general management in various countries across Latin America and, subsequently, Canada. Most recently, he took responsibilities for the Structural Heart commercial operations in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. A dedicated husband and father of two, he earned an MBA focusing on venture development as a Consortium Scholar from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

 

13. Hal Delgado

Title: Vice President of Quality & Compliance

Hal Delgado is the Vice President of Quality & Compliance of Ethicon Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Company. 14. Tiffany Nardone

Tiffany Nardone is the Vice President of Market Access Strategic Accounts and Field Reimbursement of GSK, a global biopharma company with the ambition and purpose to unite science, technology, and talent to get ahead of disease together. Nardone first got her start in 1999 as a professional sales representative at The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. From there, she went on to Merck, where she served as a senior sales representative, her most recent position prior to joining GSK. Nardone graduated from the University of Florida - Warrington College of Business with an MBA, from DePaul University with an MEd, and from Rutgers Business School with an undergraduate degree in marketing.

 

15. Luigi Meneghini
Company: Sanofi
Title: Vice President of U.S. Diabetes Medical Affairs

Luigi Meneghini is the Vice President of U.S. Diabetes Medical Affairs for Sanofi. He first joined the company in 2020. Meneghini earned an MD from the Emory University School of Medicine, an MBA in health administration from the University of Miami, and an undergraduate degree in chemistry and French from Emory University.

 

16. Chris Decarolis
Company: Philips
Title: Vice President

Chris Decarolis is the Vice President of Philips, a company whose activities cover all aspects of healthcare and well-being. Juan Toro is the Vice President of Commercial and Strategy as well as the Vice President of Strategy, Business Transformation, and Customer Experience-LatAm at Medtronic, a global healthcare technology leader boldly attacking the most challenging health problems facing humanity with innovations that transform lives. It develops and manufactures medical device technologies and therapies to treat chronic diseases worldwide.

Toro first got his start in 1999 as a treasury manager at Johnson & Johnson. He graduated from The George Washington University with an MBA, and from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.

 

18. Abhishek Gupta
Company: Cipla
Title: Senior Vice President and Head of R&D, North America

Abhishek Gupta is the Senior Vice President and Head of R&D, North America at Cipla, a global pharmaceutical company that uses cutting edge technology and innovation to meet the everyday needs of all patients. For more than 80 years, Cipla has been one of the most respected pharmaceutical names in India as well as across more than 100 countries. Previously, Gupta was Head of R&D at the Lupin Inhalation Research Center, and before that, an inhalation technology platform leader, project leader, and fellow at Novartis. Earlier in his career, he worked with Cardinal Health as a scientist. Gupta earned a PhD from the University of Arizona, and an undergraduate degree in pharmacy from Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science.

 

19. Brian Boschetti
Company: B. Braun Medical
Title: Vice President

Brian Boschetti is the Vice President of B. Braun Medical, a leader in infusion therapy and pain management that develops, manufactures, and markets innovative medical products and services to the healthcare industry. Other key product areas include nutrition, pharmacy admixture, and dialysis. Boschetti graduated from Columbia Business School with an EMBA, from New York University with an MS in marketing, and from the University of Pennsylvania with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering.

 

20. Scott McMillin

Title: VP of Sales for Southern Edge Orthopaedics

Scott McMillin is the VP of Sales for Southern Edge Orthopaedics at Arthrex, a global medical device company and leader in new product development and medical education in orthopedics. From there, he went on to Cayenne Medical, before eventually rising to sales representative at Zimmer Biomet, his most recent position prior to joining Arthrex. McMillin graduated from the University at Buffalo with an MBA and an undergraduate degree in business administration.

 

21. Yesenia Garcia

Title: Vice President of Marketing

Yesenia Garcia is the Vice President of Marketing at Curaleaf. She first joined the company in 2019. 22. Roberto Silberwasser

23. William Zhou

Earlier in his career, he worked with Beijing TongRen Hospital as a resident in ophthalmology. Zhou earned an MBBS from the Capital University of Medical Sciences, and an MBA from Jack Welch Management Institute.

 

25. Takaaki Terahara
