Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Receives FDA Approval for Innovative Sleep Apnea Detection Feature

Samsung Electronics has received FDA De Novo authorization for the sleep apnea feature on its Samsung Health Monitor app, a groundbreaking approval making it the first of its kind authorized by the FDA. The feature, available on compatible Samsung Galaxy Watches and Phones, empowers users over 22 to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) over a two-night monitoring period by tracking their sleep twice for over four hours within ten days. OSA can lead to disrupted oxygen supply, lower sleep quality, and daytime fatigue, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Samsung's commitment to better sleep health is evident through its three-pronged approach: understanding sleep patterns, building better habits, and creating a sleep-friendly environment. The sleep apnea feature aims to proactively identify potential health risks, with approximately 25% of men and 10% of women in the U.S. experiencing OSA, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Expected to be available on the Galaxy Watch series in the U.S. in the third quarter, this FDA-approved feature underscores Samsung's dedication to providing innovative tools for enhanced sleep health to its users.
