GE HealthCare Expands Cardiac AI Coaching to Hand-Held Ultrasound Scanner

GE HealthCare has integrated Caption Health's artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its hand-held ultrasound scanner, bringing cardiac ultrasound coaching programs to the point of care. Caption AI offers step-by-step guidance to help technicians capture diagnostic images of a beating heart in real-time, without requiring specialized training. This expansion to the pocket-sized probe aims to facilitate easier access to high-quality cardiac screening, empowering users with tools for early detection of cardiac disease.

Roland Rott, President and CEO of Ultrasound at GE HealthCare, emphasized the significance of this integration, stating that it opens a new chapter for cardiac screening by providing guidance and tools for high-quality ultrasound scans. The debut of the more mobile version of Caption AI at the American College of Cardiology's annual scientific session marks a milestone in GE HealthCare's efforts to leverage AI technology in healthcare, with features including visual cues for optimal probe positioning and automated calculation of ejection fraction for assessing cardiac efficiency. GE HealthCare's collaboration with Caption Health has received recognition and support, including a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to extend the reach of these AI approaches into low- and middle-income countries, contributing to efforts in maternal health, lung screening, and pneumonia detection.
